I’m afraid of writing about myself as much as of self-analysis since if it’s not carefully done, it would appear to be a made-up story. I don’t know much about psychology, neither about logics, so it’s better not look into it too much. But I have to say something, so I’d rather talk about my works on which I have the rights to speak. However, I don’t know about my works either, just like I don’t know much about myself, so the so-called rights of speech is literally talking bosh. To me, my works or my actions of creating arts is just placebo. It can’t solve any problems, rather, it can only make myself feel better. The effect of placebo is that it can kill my time and energy, which is luxurious and effective. From When Breakdown Begins to Dao De Jing, from Carsickness Pills to One Hundred Meters, these works create an illusion of busyness. Busyness itself cannot solve any problem—it won’t help me know what to eat for dinner, neither help me read other people’s minds. Don’t mention about academic issues. Such busyness, however, can surprisingly bring me a sense of happiness despite it might be just an illusion.
Walking up is a terrible thing because from the moment I open my eyes, I start to feel uneasy. The question of “Who Am I ” makes me feel a headache. Such anxiety grew stronger, especially after I lost my status as a “student”. But I am not confident to call myself “artist” either. What can comfort myself is only through repetitive self-deception and paralysis. Pretending to be busy with creative work is helpful. It has comforted me more than once, including my time in Norway. “The artist from China” is my only identity, but this identity is so unreal. I tried my best to deceive myself and everyone else to make it seem real. After all, when everyone believes that Jesus’s mother is a virgin, it won’t matter if she is a virgin or not. When Breakdown Begins is a fake evidence of my identity back then. If you talk to me about this work of mine, I might mention soul, rules, individuals, communities, and the like. But the fact is that this piece of work is solely a self-consoling for me. However, after I came back to China, the identity of “Chinese artist” I tried to prove became blurry in the land where it is occupied by “Chinese” and “artists”. I, as a result, needed a new lie and placebo, so I made those works about “languages.” I used two stamps carved with the number 1 and 0 to print out some binary codes. These codes are the language of computer, which is out of place in our human communication. I don’t know how a computer locates itself in the crowd. Does it have an identity? Oftentimes, I feel myself as an alien who speaks a different language that is not understood. When my interests come, I want to understand what others are saying; when my interest is gone, I can just talk to myself. These concepts are manifested in my works like Talk, I Don’t Understand you, and Kiss.
